Virtual Island Summit Sponsors

The government of Curaçao planned to promote the Smart Nation Curaçao Platform to a global audience. They did this through a VIS2019 session entitled ‘Curaçao: The Smart Island’ which had a number of high-level speakers.

Through connections made during VIS2019, Curaçao is now a flagship nation in the Caribbean for ‘The Commitments Accelerator for Plastic Pollution’ (CAPP). Following the positive response of their session and the connections made at VIS2019, the government of Curaçao decided to also sponsor VIS2020. This included a panel session entitled ‘Island 2 Island Solutions: Curaçao’s Technology Driven Companies’.

This year the @HOME in Curaçao program also chose Island Innovation’s ‘Adapting Tourist Destinations for Remote Workers & Digital Nomads in 2021’ webinar for its launch.

Several years ago, the government of Curaçao launched the Smart Nation Curaçao Platform, part of a phased long term vision and strategic plan towards the development of Willemstad, the country’s capital, as a Smart City and Curaçao as a Smart Nation. The Ministry of Economic Development of Curaçao decided to sponsor the first Virtual Island Summit in 2019.

One of the main objectives of sponsoring the VIS2019 for Curaçao was to highlight the Smart Nation Curaçao Platform to a worldwide audience. The dedicated VIS2019 session connected participants with other experts and organisations, in addition to over 5,000 attendees from across the world.

The Ministry of Economic Development of Curaçao were pleased with the positive response they received from their session at VIS2019, so also sponsored the Virtual Island Summit 2020. This included a session moderated by Vanessa Toré entitled ‘Island 2 Island Solutions: Curaçao’s Technology Driven Companies’ which showcased home-grown businesses and solutions from Curaçao which are available internationally. The VIS2020 reached over 10,000 attendees worldwide. Additionally, Vanessa became a VIS2020 Ambassador and helped to promote the event on the island.

“At the Ministry of Economic Development of Curaçao, we had already become aware of how effective virtual events could be for island nations which attracted us to become sponsors of the first Virtual Island Summit in 2019, and during the summit some of our team members also gave presentations. We then decided to sponsor the Virtual Island Summit 2020 and are looking forward to the next one. Our Approach

The government of Curaçao has sponsored the Virtual Island Summit for three consecutive years, and we have successfully worked with members of the Ministry of Economic Development of Curaçao since 2019 on various projects.

Once we ascertained what the government of Curaçao wanted to achieve from sponsoring the Virtual Island Summit, we planned corresponding sessions to highlight their key messages and the policies they wanted to showcase.

In the lead up to both the VIS2019 and VIS2020, we also regularly shared details about the government of Curaçao in our email newsletters and on our social media channels, thus helping to actively promote Curaçao.

What’s next for The Ministry of Economic Development of Curaçao?

Following the success of their sponsorship of both the VIS2019 and VIS2020, combined with their engaging and well-received sessions at the summits, the Ministry of Economic Development of Curaçao is planning to sponsor the upcoming Virtual Island Summit 2021. In March 2021, the government of Curaçao highlighted their commitment to the reduction in single-use plastic, and they have become a flagship nation in the Caribbean for ‘The Commitments Accelerator for Plastic Pollution’ (CAPP). This came from a connection made during the VIS2019.

The government of Curaçao has remained very well-connected with Island Innovation since VIS2019 and continues to be involved in many of our other events. This includes the Island Finance Forum 2021, held in April 2021, where Vanessa Toré was a speaker at the ‘Economic Recovery and Inclusive Growth in a Post-Pandemic World: The Island Scenario’ session.

The steps that the government of Curaçao is taking with the Smart Nation Curaçao Platform, combined with mitigating the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, lead to the development of the @HOME in Curaçao remote worker visa program.

Designed to help Curaçao recover economically, the scheme allows remote workers/digital nomads to come and live and work in the country for six months, with the possibility of extension. The program will help the country to transition from a reliance on tourism to longer-term remote workers. The @HOME in Curaçao program was launched at Island Innovation’s ‘Adapting Tourist Destinations for Remote Workers & Digital Nomads in 2021’ webinar by speaker Dr. Steven Martina, Minister of Economic Development and Tourism of Curaçao.
