I joined Island Innovation in May 2021. I’m a graphic designer but I also assist in editing and publishing website content including client case studies.

What I love the most in working with this company is the outstanding collaboration.
We shared common ideas and a passion for sustainability. It’s an honor for me to be a part of
this team where I get the chance to work with other people across the globe. My care for the environment inspires me to do better and be productive.

I’m an undergraduate with a Bachelor’s degree in Aeronautical Engineering at Mindanao Aeronautical Technical School College of Technology, Davao City, Philippines. The knowledge and skills that I acquired in engineering help me become innovative to come up with new ideas in my role in this company as a graphic designer. The Island Innovation team help me develop my talent and enhance my skill set.

I joined Island Innovation in July of 2021, after being an Island Innovation Ambassador since January of the same year. As Content Manager, I am responsible for, among other things, organising sponsorships, content strategy design and implementation, reviewing social media channels, and creating content to promote specific Island Innovation events.

One of the best things about working with Island Innovation is the opportunity to work with like-minded and supportive colleagues who facilitate each others’ efforts to fully implement the vision of Island Innovation. I truly believe that this vision will make this world a better place by enhancing the ability of island communities to operate collaboratively, and thereby become more sustainable and resilient. I am quite enthusiastic and driven, so it is wonderful to work with colleagues who match and encourage my enthusiasm and relentless positivity!

I was born in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and my family moved to Barbados when I was about 4 years old. From an early age, I loved the nature and exploring, and became an aspiring environmental activist, when such a thing was quite unheard of in Barbados! After I completed my Cambridge A-Level studies at Queen’s College, I became an exchange student with the organization American Field Service (AFS) and moved to Denmark. I have to say that being as exchange student was one of the best decisions I made in my life! I gained lifelong friends, learned a new language, and came to appreciate an entirely different culture. I also became more resilient and adaptable, and learned to truly appreciate the fact that, despite the perceived barriers of culture and language, people all over the world share the same desire to connect at an authentic level, and forge meaningful relationships.

In Denmark I indulged my interest in Scandinavian mythology, studying Nordic literature at The University of Odense, before returning to Barbados to complete an undergraduate degree in Literatures in English at the University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus. Here, I also completed an undergraduate degree in Law.

in my capacity as an educational consultant, I possess over two decades of experience in teaching students with learning disabilities such as dyslexia, auditory processing disorder, Asperger’s syndrome, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, as well as emotional/physiological challenges such as Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. I strive to be an effective advocate for children, and those who are more marginalised in the both educationally and societally.

My passion for the environment has led to two other significant career achievements: I am currently contracted with the University of Strathclyde Centre for Environmental Law and Governance as an educational consultant with the Ocean Explorers Programme, and I am also an Environmental Education Expert with Omnis Education. Recently, I was appointed as Technical Secretary of the Bureau of Standards Jamaica Correctional Services Technical Committee.

I am the mother of an amazing son, CJ, who makes my life a wonderful adventure, and I live with my family and my five awesome cats, Lovington, Leo, Luna, Luscious and Moxie.

I love writing,and I have written articles on climate change and social issues for a number of publications, including Global Voices and The Elephant Journal. My hobbies include surfing, weight training, running, reading, writing, equestrian sports, and hiking.

Climate and the Deep Sea World: Schmidt Ocean Institute’s Global Efforts – A Visual Journey and Panel – GREEN ZONE EVENT

Description: The backdrop of legends and movies, the deep sea has always been unfathomable because we had no idea what existed there. Once thought to be barren of life, we now know this couldn’t be further from the truth. Life exists under extreme conditions at these depths and with every deep-sea expedition we gain a greater understanding of the crucial services it provides our planet. Although seemingly remote, the deep sea plays a key role in our climate. Better understanding of remote and deep-sea biodiversity, offers insight into how these systems both influence the climate and are, in turn, influenced by climate change. These insights are made with the help of new technologies such as Schmidt Ocean Institute’s 4,500 meter capable underwater robot, ROV SuBastian. This two hour event will feature exclusive, award-winning, video content from deep sea waters showcasing new species and underwater features with interviews from scientists around the world discussing the impact of climate change on these fragile ecosystems. Footage will be shared from the Great Barrier Reef and Coral Sea Marine Parks in Australia, the Phoenix Islands Protected Area in Kiribati, the Mariana Trench in Guam, submarine volcanoes of Tonga, hydrothermal vents in the Gulf of California – Mexico, and white shark feeding grounds in the high seas. The film will be followed by a panel centered on climate impacts in the deep sea and how we can better understand and mitigate this in order to improve the overall health of our planet. The panel will include Ocean experts focused on high seas, biodiversity and seabed mapping.

Description: Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) is the world’s largest environmental education organisation, with 100 members in 79 countries. Through five ground-breaking programmes, we empower people to take meaningful and purposeful action to help create a more sustainable world.
The theme of COP 26, ‘Together for Our Planet’ provides an important platform to showcase the impacts being created by the network of FEE and explain how each programme is driving the agenda of Climate Action. FEE has prioritised Climate Change, along with Biodiversity Loss and Pollution, as key areas of urgent action for its 10-year strategy – GAIA 20:30.
Through panel presentations, the event will showcase stories of positive actions from around the world. Role of indigenous peoples and their communities and nature-based solutions – GREEN ZONE EVENT

Description: The event seeks to generate a space for dialogue and analysis to highlight the importance of the role of indigenous peoples and their territories in the achievement of government´s climate commitments in a context of green, fair and resilient recovery, post COVID 19.
For this, solutions based on communities and nature will be socialized, emphasizing the importance of the territory´s defense strategies and taking into account a context of extractive industries, infrastructures and “exclusive conservation”.
In this sense, the session will show the route that indigenous peoples are taking, as well as their actions in order to give recommendations to guide and articulate with the States for a green, fair and resilient recovery, conserving the territories through practices and traditional and ancient knowledge. These recommendations will be key inputs both for the region and for each of the Amazon countries’ institutions.
In addition, key issues for indigenous peoples that contribute to inclusive conservation will be addressed, such as climate financing, the implementation of the Leticia Pact in indigenous territories, increasing climate ambition through NDCs and Territorial Governance. There will be a space to present indigenous peoples’ own initiatives such as Tambores de la Selva, a community training program in Communication and leadership for young Amazonians, whose purpose is to strengthen professional capacities for the benefit of their community.

Inuit Knowledge, Innovation and Infrastructure – Inuit youth perspectives on infrastructure for adaptation and resilience – GREEN ZONE EVENT

Description: The Inuit Circumpolar Council (ICC) will host a panel discussion with Inuit youth from across Inuit Nunaat, Inuit homelands and territory, to explore answers to the question of how existing Inuit knowledge and Inuit innovation and technologies might help better inform climate-resilient infrastructure. Most of Inuit Nunaat already has an infrastructure deficit that connects to climate resilience and adaptive capacity. For example:
– Education: Most Inuit must travel far from home for post-secondary education.
– Power: Many Inuit communities are reliant on diesel generators to provide power.
– Housing: Lack of sufficient housing is chronic in Inuit communities. In 2017, there were almost 900 people in Greenland with no permanent housing.
– Marine infrastructure: Inuit are coastal people and rely on marine resources. With an Arctic Ocean open for more of the year, the seas present opportunities for traditional harvesting pursuits, and other opportunities from increased shipping access. But this require appropriate infrastructure that is currently sparse in Inuit Nunaat.
Climate change is a challenge to the integrity of various aspects of our community infrastructure. In Alaska, whole Inuit communities are threatened, as big storms are no longer buffered by protective shore ice. In other communities, there are concerns about the integrity of roads, pipelines, water and sewer pipes, and runways. The whole connective tissue of Inuit Nunaat is being challenged by climate change. This event will engage Inuit youth in thinking about and describing the sorts of infrastructure that will be necessary to withstand the changes already occurring in their home communities.

Women in Finance Climate Action Group: practical steps to deliver finance for climate action and gender equality – GREEN ZONE EVENT

Description: Women and girls are hit hardest by climate impacts around the world. They are also hugely under-represented in climate negotiations.
Join Aviva CEO Amanda Blanc as she convenes the Women in Finance Climate Action Group – a collective of women leaders from around the world – to set out how we can tackle the connected issues of gender inequality and private climate finance.
The event will feature senior women from business, the public sector and civil society exploring how private finance can and must support both climate action and gender equality. It will focus on the tangible actions that are needed, underpinned by the first ever research report to look into the connection between these issues in depth.

Fixing finance from the ground up – making Indigenous voices count in the fight to stop deforestation – GREEN ZONE EVENT

Description: An event bringing together Indigenous communities, financial leaders, and policy makers to find solutions to the deforestation epidemic.
There is no end to the climate crisis without stopping tropical deforestation. Our forests are our key ally if we’re to keep to our climate goals. In 2020 the tropics lost 12.2 million hectares of forest cover. Of that 4.2 million hectares, an area the size of the Netherlands, occurred within humid tropical primary forests, which are hotspots for biodiversity, home to indigenous communities and vital in halting climate breakdown.
For many years Global Witness and Global Canopy have exposed the international demand for commodities – soy, beef, palm oil and timber – that are driving this destruction and the human and environmental abuses that go alongside it. The financial sector plays a key role in this global trade and must now work closely with the guardians for the forest who are Indigenous Peoples.
Our event will put policy makers, financial leaders, and Indigenous communities in one room, exploring the problem and coming up with solutions. What can policymakers do to address the accountability gap for finance on deforestation? How can responsible financiers benefit from tackling the problem? What do Indigenous Peoples need from financial institutions to protect their homes?
There is a growing global call to end the financing behind the abusive environmental and human rights practices in forest-risk commodities. By highlighting the crucial role Indigenous Peoples and local communities play in preserving forests, the event aims at creating a space for discussing solutions that would best protect the world’s forests and the people who depend on them.

Climate justice, education and gender equality: targeting the connections – GREEN ZONE EVENT

Description: Failing to recognise and address the links between climate change, girls’ education and gender equality undermines both the Paris Agreement and the right to education for millions of students.
We know that many of the root causes of climate change contribute to gender inequality which can lead to girls being out of school – this year alone, at least four million girls won’t complete their education due to climate-related crises (Malala Fund). Gender inequality also blocks girls from equal access to quality climate education, green jobs, leadership opportunities etc.
Through the Declaration on Children, Youth and Climate Action (2019), the MOCK COP26 Treaty (2020), youth activists have made it clear that education plays a critical role during climate disasters and displacement. It is also one of the most effective solutions we have to the climate crisis. Existing research reveals that every additional year of schooling for girls leads to significant improvements in a country’s resilience to climate-related disasters.
Yet existing commitments on climate education fall far short on delivering quality climate education – curricula are outdated and girls being left behind. In a recent survey, 82% didn’t know where to find information on the Paris Agreement and only 16% had learned about the gendered impacts of climate change (Plan International).
COP26 is a critical opportunity for world leaders to work in partnership with youth and youth-led organizations to target the connections, particularly through the review and enhancement of the Doha Work Programme on Action for Climate Empowerment.
Targeting the Connections will bring together youth activists with world leaders, experts and artists to share experiences, priorities and solutions for building a greener, fairer future. Invited speakers include UNFCCC Executive Director Patricia Espinosa, COP26 President Designate Alok Sharma, Malala Yousafzai and Vanessa Nakate.
This event is hosted by Malala Fund, Plan International, Transform Education, UNGEI, UNICEF, YOUNGO and others.

Coastal Blue Carbon Panel – The vital role of mangroves for climate change mitigation and adaptation – GREEN ZONE EVENT

Description: Mangrove forests are the ultimate nature-based solutions for both climate change mitigation and adaptation. They capture and store carbon dioxide – coastal blue carbon – and they do this at rates far greater than most tropical rainforests. Protecting and restoring mangroves is a highly efficient and effective way to simultaneously reduce GHG emissions, and supporting adaptation to climate change . Mangrove protection and restoration is a vital component of achieving the large-scale carbon drawdown essential if we are to have a chance of limiting global warming to 1.5C.
Coastal tropical nations and their citizens hold the key to mangrove conservation and restoration.
This panel will bring together governments, civil society and world renowned scientists from Colombia, Madagascar, Costa Rica, Seychelles and Indonesia for an interactive discussion that will promote south-south knowledge sharing by:
– Bringing to light the importance of mangroves in the context of global climate breakdown, from the perspective of coastal communities living on the frontline and governments working to ensure their countries’ blue economies are safeguarded
– Demonstrating how the conservation and restoration of coastal blue carbon can help ensure that countries’ Nationally Determined Contributions under the Paris Agreement are sufficiently ambitious to tackle the climate emergency
– Explaining how, if the necessary policy and safeguarding frameworks are in place, carbon markets can be leveraged to fund and incentivise sustainable mangrove management and restoration
– Highlighting some of the policy and implementation barriers that must be tackled if mangrove blue carbon is to reach its full potential, as well as some potential solutions to these barriers

Weathering the Storm: Scottish Poets Discuss Climate Change Resilience and Adaptation – GREEN ZONE EVENT

Description: Three Scottish poets, Roseanne Watt from Shetland, with Pàdraig MacAoidh and Donald S. Murray, both from Lewis, will give readings of their work which reflects the challenges faced by island communities due to climate change and the ecological degradation it causes. They also represent the diverse linguistic traditions of the Scottish islands which have persisted to this day despite many hardships and offer an insight into their unique form of resilience. The readings will be in English, Scottish Gaelic and Shetlandic with accompanying text for the English speaking and D/deaf audience members. We wish to extend a warm welcome to all of the delegates and visitors to the COP especially to the indigenous peoples from around the world and hope that you will be able to attend. Ceud mìle fàilte! The event is chaired by Drew McNaughton, poet and former events coordinator for the Scottish Poetry Library and committee member of Seachdain na Gàidhlig. Tackling these challenges whilst providing sustainable resilient livelihoods for food producers and nutritious, affordable food for a growing global population is therefore a critical challenge for this decade.
The Just Rural Transition (JRT) and Tropical Forest Alliance jointly present this technical event in support of the COP26 Nature Campaign. This event builds on two high-level events in the morning of Nature Day to announce ambitions and actions by members states and other stakeholders to reform agriculture and land use and take global action on forests and critical ecosystems.
It provides a platform for technical experts and representatives from governments, private sector, farmers, research organisations and other stakeholders to discuss options to contribute towards just rural transitions and deforestation-free commodity supply chains around the world. Description: Join us for the premiere of an inspirational film highlighting coastal habitat restoration with examples from the UK, China, South Korea and the Cayman Islands, followed by an expert Q&A panel discussion.
Hosted by the RSPB and the Environment Agency, this event will showcase successful examples of habitat restoration in coastal wetlands and illustrate the benefits to climate mitigation, adaptation and resilience, the economy, and health and well-being of local communities. The event will share lessons learned from implementation and community engagement and facilitate discussion around the value of these sites.
Examples of projects illustrated will include the Central Mangrove Wetland in the Cayman Islands, Medmerry in the UK, Shanghai Chongming Dongtan National Nature Reserve and Jiangsu Yancheng Yellow Sea World Heritage Site in China and the South Korean Yellow Sea Getbol World Heritage Site. Through these projects, and others, this event will explore the ecological and cultural benefits that protecting these habitats can bring for the environment and local people.
The past 200 years has resulted in significant global loss of nature-rich, carbon-storing coastal wetlands, which provide a lifeline for millions of people. This event demonstrates how through restoring, protecting and creating these habitats we can make coastlines more resilient to sea level rise and coastal erosion, whilst providing significant benefits for people and nature, through using nature-based solutions.

Description: The Pacific Islands are under threat. Climate change has led to warmer waters, changing weather patterns, flooding and coral bleaching, and many islands are predicted to be lost to rising seas within our lifetime. Simultaneously, the Arctic is warming quicker than any other region on Earth and Arctic cultures are experiencing the devastating erosion of their land as ice caps continue to disappear at an alarming rate. Despite the vast geographical distance between the Arctic and Pacific Islands, it is striking that many of the challenges facing these communities as a consequence of the climate crisis are the same, yet both were largely ignored when they raised the alarm decades ago. It is now time for their voices to be heard.
One Young World, the global forum for young leaders, in collaboration with the British Museum and the Republic of Palau, is hosting an immersive panel at the Cinema Auditorium. The discussion will surround the symbiotic relationship between people and nature, highlighting the importance of amplifying and learning from the voices and work of Indigenous communities when it comes to the safeguarding of our natural world. Featuring speakers hailing from both Arctic and Pacific Island communities, this panel will serve to highlight the key learnings in adaptation and resilience from these two unique communities.

The nexus between Gender-based climate adaptation and localisation – Lessons from Indonesia – GREEN ZONE EVENT

Description: Climate change is a global issue, but its impacts manifest at local levels and are experienced differently according to social and economic factors, the burden of which is inequality distributed. To be equitable, sustainable and inclusive, climate change adaptation must be locally led and owned.
Giving local people the right resources, agency, information, tools, and capabilities enables them to use their unique indigenous knowledge of local conditions to prioritise and design adaptation solutions that best suit their unique circumstances.
During this event, arranged by Islamic Relief Indonesia in collaboration with KONSEPSI, we will hear from communities struggling with the climate crisis and share examples of local adaptation practices from communities in Lombok, such as the use of indigenous knowledge to understand weather and climate patterns to make decisions about crops and farming practices.
A panel of experts, including representatives from local government and civil society organisations will provide insights into the challenges and opportunities in climate change mitigation and inclusive adaptation in local contexts. Drawing upon lessons learned from the province of West Nusa Tenggara, the panel will also discuss measures to mainstream gender-based climate change adaptation into local planning and budgeting as well as Indonesia’s progress on Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation through Low Carbon Development and Climate Resilience Strategy.
The event will also share Islamic Relief Indonesia and KONSPSI’s experiences and lessons learned on gender-based climate change adaptation initiatives including learnings from the implementation of gender-based climate adaptation field schools in 3 targeted communities of rain-fed agriculture, salt production, and lobsters cultivation.

Climate Change Message in a Bottle: Bringing the Voices of Scottish and International Young Islanders to COP26 – SCELG @COP26

Description: Climate Change Message in a Bottle is a project funded by the Scottish Government which aims to bring the voices of island youth closer to COP26. Founded by Strathclyde Centre for Environmental Law and Governance, in partnership with Taigh Chearsabhagh Museum and Arts Centre on the Isle of North Uist, the project involves educational workshops aimed at schoolchildren aged 7-11 on islands around Scotland and the world. After learning about climate science, clean energy and COP26, schoolchildren have written their messages to COP26, demanding climate action from political leaders at the summit. At this event, we will be hosting a screening of the project’s film, which showcases messages from island youth around the world to COP26. After watching the short film, you will hear directly from several young islanders who have been involved in the project, and politicians and environmental experts will speak in response to the children’s messages. We are delighted that MSP Clare Haughey, Minister for Children and Young People, will be joining us to speak at this event. Finally, audience members will have the chance to discuss the messages and leave a response to the children themselves. I am a Fellow at Island Innovation and work and assist on a number of projects related to digital marketing and research on sustainability and climate change. I am currently in my master’s degree in International Organizations and Crisis Management at Friedrich-Schiller University Jena, in Germany. I anticipate writing my final thesis on crisis management in the Arctic, exploring how climate change will drastically influence security dynamics in the region. I like working at Island Innovation because I am able to connect with a variety of individuals and stakeholders in the sustainability and climate change sector and get to work alongside an amazing team of knowledgeable and passionate individuals. I also love that I am able to combine my academic interests with my work.
I spent my childhood split between Canada’s arctic, where I lived in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut for 10 years, and the southern province of Ontario. I attended the University of Windsor for my bachelor’s degree and studied International Relations and Development. I also represented the University of Windsor at the provincial and national level as a member of the varsity track and field team during my studies. After I graduated from my bachelor’s degree, I moved out to the Canadian Rocky Mountains for a summer to work for the National Park Service in Jasper, Alberta. This summer was completely transformational for me and it ignited a passion for all things outdoors and the desire to want to preserve our planet. I spent the next two years living on Vancouver Island in British Columbia where I lived in Victoria working for the Public Health sector and then in the coastal surfing town of Tofino working for the local tourism office. Living on Vancouver Island, I was exposed to a thriving island community and got to experience living amongst people who shared the same passions for the outdoors and the preservation of our planet. Working at Island Innovation has made me feel like I am part of a similar community of people.

I am currently working alongside the Marketing Director to build the marketing strategy for the 2022 Ambassador Program. This includes updating the program website, creating a content calendar as well as preparing materials and resources to support hundreds of ambassadors around the world.

I read economics at the University of Pennsylvania and obtained my BA in 2020. I have experience working in the nonprofit sector, on sustainable community projects, environmental campaigns -particularly related to styrofoam and single-use plastics-, and social media management. I am passionate about driving climate action and influencing positive social change around the world which led me to being selected as the Undergraduate Honorable Mention for the 2020 Penn Global Citizenship Award.

Working with Island Innovation has afforded me the opportunity to continue pursuing my passion! It is exhilarating to be collaborating with and learning from people across different continents, who all share a common goal and desire to promote sustainable development in island communities. I love that remote working provides a forum for our diverse voices to connect and collaborate.

I currently live in Trinidad and Tobago surrounded by lush green hills and seaside views. I love spending time outdoors, hiking and swimming, which is the perfect backdrop for my hobby as an amateur photographer. I love traveling, exploring new cultures and collecting art from all of the places that I visit!

I currently work at Island Innovation as Growth and Partnerships Manager, responsible for engaging sponsors on our Island Finance Forum virtual event. I love being part of a multicultural team that shares the same values and joins efforts for a more sustainable future.

During seven years I have lived abroad (France, South Africa and Colombia) where I acquired academic skills and professional development. I have a Masters degree in International Project Management, a Postgraduate degree in Neurosciences and Behaviour and a Bachelor in Business and Marketing. I have worked on several social projects addressing different agendas (Peace Process in Colombia, refugees in South Africa, reducing food waste, circular economy, among others.) These experiences required having an understanding of complex issues and communicating them in an bjective way to achieve the engagement and build a solid relationship with various stakeholders composed of funders, private sector partners, NGOs, government and the vulnerable population.

I currently live in Sao Paulo, Brazil and am an active volunteer at Institutos Rizomas, a project focused on socio-emotional skills and school tutoring for children and adolescents living in extreme adversity. I believe that every child can be an agent of transformation and in the power of collaboration to foster positive impact.

I am Adriel Charles and I would have recently joined the Island Innovation team as a Fellow. In 2021, I completed my BSc International Relations with a Minor in Cultural Studies from the University of the West Indies (St. Augustine Campus). There I would have maximized the opportunities presented to me and worked on developing my skills as a leader. In 2021 I was selected as a Sustainability Leader by United People Global and in 2022 I am the Country Ambassador for Trinidad and Tobago at UNITE 2030. It is evident that I am passionate about the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and over the last 5 years, I have participated in numerous conferences, representing Caribbean youth with emphasis on Climate Change and the Region’s development.

I currently live in Trinidad and Tobago, an island overflowing with a plethora of cultures and warmth. When I’m not planning to change the world, I enjoy trying new recipes from all across the globe! I recently made South Korean Hotteok and they were absolutely delicious.

Despite only being here for a few weeks I have already grown to love and appreciate even more the work done here. I work on the Ambassador program with Content Development and Management. I am excited to be a part of this dynamic and international team and I look forward to the skills and experiences I’ll gain as I journey on becoming a Diplomat.

I am the Director of Client Services, providing strategic support and direction on projects related to Digital Marketing, Communications, Public Relations and Marketing Strategy. This is an exciting opportunity for me because Island Innovation is such an avant garde working environment. This is the future of work, remote, inclusive, innovative and exceptional professionals who are already thought leaders or potential thought leaders in their fields.

My previous work experience spans from hospitality to international development, but I am most proud of my entrepreneurial ventures. I recently sold my first company which was a Tour company in Saint Lucia. My entrepreneur journey started in 2014 and the highlight so far has been being able to attend Expo Dubai 2020 to explore new business relationships and develop ideas for a new venture in Relocation Concierge Services.

The most challenging role I have taken on is motherhood. I am mother to two creative and curious little girls, who are everything I wanted to be growing up. They are engaging, talented, adventurous and bold. Already making their mark at 5 and 18 months. I am teaching them that the world is bigger than the island they were born on and I hope that we can live in many continents before they are old enough to leave the nest. I think exposure and globalization is important. The world needs to learn from each other, best practices, share ideas, talents and treasures.

I have been working on the in-person event framework for the Virtual Island Summit 2022. I edited the draft and interviewed a few people about their experience with the VIS in the past. I have also prepared invitation emails and engagement proposals for the ambassador’s program.

The healthy work environment and amazing people. But I can’t overlook the impact Island Innovation has been having on the island states and sustainability reformations around the world. Truly inspiring.
I am really proud to have been part of UNFCCC’s COP24 in Katowice, Poland. In a team of 5, I hosted sustainable future events for the school children. And I spoke at the IUCN’s first-ever Global Youth Summit last year. I was a speaker and a host at the “Climate Change in the Rural Context” Event.

I want to be an ambassador for climate education. I like to write and publish weekly articles on medium. It’s alarming to see the term sustainability being misused nowadays. It has been reduced to nothing but a marketing strategy.

I have always had a passion for sustainable development and the fight against climate change. This organization piqued my interest during a lecture I attended where James was the guest speaker discussing non-traditional security. I immediately jumped at the opportunity to be an Island Innovation Fellow. I am glad to report that I am working with Isable, an Island Innovation project manager on the Ambassador’s Program. There I intend to make a positive impact during my time in the program.

The team is very inclusive and welcoming and I can tell that everyone is passionate about the execution of these projects. As someone who worked as an administrative assistant and a teacher in the past, I am confident that my level of organization and adaptability will allow me to make the most out of this program.

As a citizen of a Small Island Developing State, the importance of environmental security seeps into many aspects of my life. I have altered my living to become more environmentally conscious. Furthermore, I have tried to spread awareness to my family and friends whenever I can. What would make my life fulfilling is if I could make effective change within my island community.

I joined Island Innovation as a fellow with a background in Business, Economics, and Sustainable Studies. With this, I am working with Thaiz Maciel to help research, produce content, strategize, and coordinate events related to the UN Ocean Conference.

Thus far, my favorite part about working at Island Innovation is contributing hands on, useful deliverables for the projects Island Innovation works on. Additionally, I find it very interesting to learn about other projects and initiatives Island Innovation has started or plans on creating through other fellows with whom I am working and traveling.

I am currently a Junior Morehead Cain Scholar at the University of North Carolina. I am from New Orleans, Louisiana, though this summer I will be traveling and working in Ponta Delgada, Lisbon, Luqa, Dublin, and Arranmore Island.

In my free time, I love to hike, read, run, and explore different cities with my friends. I also enjoy immersing myself in activities enjoyed by the locals in the areas I travel. A goal of mine is to learn more languages to further understand different cultures and businesses globally.

Regarding sustainability, I am very passionate about the transition to renewable energy, ESG integration into business, and decreasing the prevalence of food deserts internationally.

My background in sustainability so far consists of involvement in OpenSolar, the Portfolio Management Team, the City of Centennial, and the Center for Sustainable Enterprise. With OpenSolar, I worked as a research analyst to determine criteria that makes solar power most profitable in certain regions, specifically in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. With PMT, I work as a portfolio analyst to invest within the energy and power sector; we currently manage and invest over $70,000 collectively through our sectors, and I am responsible for investigating different businesses and industries related to renewable energy which I project will see success in the market. I also determine which non-renewable energy stocks to pitch for a sell within the portfolio. With the City of Centennial, I worked as a research consultant and data analyst to determine where EV charging stations would be most efficient, equitable, impactful, and influential to encourage increased EV usage in the city. I also outlined criteria to follow for future EV charger installations to facilitate the goal of 18,000 EV owners by 2025 in Centennial. Lastly, within the Center for Sustainable Enterprise, I work as a Sustainable Finance and Impact Investing Intern to identify, summarize, and accumulate appropriate resources, case studies, and research to explore associated sustainable and financial risk. I also manage and coordinate project delivery, industry research, policy analysis, and development of deliverables.

My name is Jimmy Toole and I am a Fellow at Island Innovation. I work to research renewable energies and sustainable technologies for the newsletters and social media. This is something that I am very passionate about and I am glad to have to opportunity to learn more about it. Island Innovation has been a very friendly and empathetic work environment. Even in my brief time as a fellow, I have gotten to know and chat with many people. I study Physics with a focus in energy with minors in Sustainability Studies and Applied Physical Sciences and Engineering at UNC Chapel Hill. My work history includes working in a perovskite solar lab under Dr. Jinsong Huang. I live in the United States with three brothers, my parents, a dog, and four cats. I absolutely love to travel, learn, and just about anything outside.

My role with Island Innovation this summer is to assist Nesa Constantine, Director of Client Services, in any of her tasks or projects. I look forward to learning more about how Island Innovation caters to their clients’ needs while promoting sustainable change across island communities.

Thus far, I have enjoyed experiencing the collaborative nature of the Island Innovation team. The various forms of communication channels allow everyone to stay connected and up to date on each other’s projects and work. I also appreciate the passion and energy that everyone brings to the work they are doing.

I am currently a rising junior at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill majoring in Business Administration and minoring in Entrepreneurship. Last summer, I worked on a government project in Asheville, North Carolina, providing research and anti-gentrification strategies for an upcoming affordable housing build for low-income families. Through that experience I learned the importance of including both the public and private sector in conversations and work that will benefit the overall community. During my business studies at UNC, I have developed a growing interest in sustainable business practices and how to implement them.

I am born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, and this summer I and four other Morehead-Cain scholars will be traveling to Ponta Delgada, Azores; Lisbon, Portugal; Luqa, Malta; Dublin, Ireland; and Arranmore Island, Ireland as we work for Island Innovation. I am particularly interested in the Blue Economy and the conservation of biodiversity across the globe.

I am currently working on the Virtual Island Summit 2022 with Christian and Sarah. I hope to contribute ideas and be a useful point of contact in the preparation of the Summit. The Island Innovation team is very helpful and encouraging – I like that everyone is from across the world but all are still able to collaborate and work together like in an office.

This year I finished 3 years at Oxford Brookes University doing Business management and Geography – studying topics such as sustainable development and future cities.

Born on St Helena Island but I am currently living in Stamford, UK – I am really into football and also enjoy paddleboarding, often doing this on weekends. I have completed bronze and silver DofE and am currently finishing gold and completed grade 8 for alto saxophone. Coming from a small Island I understand the fine balances there are in trying to create a sustainable environment as there are social aspects which cannot be disregarded; which is why it is great that Island innovation is able to share their ideas and help grow islands in a unique way.
