This week we are celebrating International Women’s Day by reflecting on the many great strides we have made towards impacting island women and those around the world.
Observed for over a century (since 1911), International Women’s Day celebrates the economic, health, social, political, and cultural contributions that women have made towards societal advancement – as well as use the occasion to remind the world about the need for gender equality.
Out of every 1000 people worldwide, 496 are women (49.6%) and 504 are men (50.4%), according to the Population Division of the UN’s Department of Economic and Social Affairs. While the number of women and men in the world is roughly equal, women, for centuries, have been disproportionately burdened by the world’s ills despite the vitality of their contributions to the world’s health and economy.
‘This year’s theme for International Women’s Day, “Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world,” celebrates the tremendous efforts by women and girls around the world in shaping a more equal future and recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and highlights the gaps that remain.’
From our projects to the people that work for us, we have always championed gender equality in all spheres and pledge to continue our commitment to Sustainable Development Goal 5: Achieve Gender Equality and Empower All Women and Girls, by making sure that gender equality is central to all the work we do, as I explain on this short video.
